IN THE NEWS A SPIRITUAL PERSPECTIVE

For stability and progress in Zimbabwe

Although the March legislative and presidential elections in Zimbabwe were relatively peaceful, tension and danger have increased as the government has refused to release the results of the presidential race.

Early figures on the legislative side indicated that after 28 years, President Robert Mugabe's ZANU-PF party had lost control of the lower house of Parliament. Some are convinced that the presidential race favored opposition candidate Morgan Tsvangirai. The election commission's failure to release the results has plunged the country into a crisis. Members of the opposition have been attacked, arrested, and intimidated.

Many hoped that the countries in southern Africa would take the lead in helping to resolve the issue, but they seemed reluctant until just recently.
