'I KEPT A MENTAL WATCH'

In February 2007, while I was applauding at the end of a concert, I noticed a large, hard lump at the base of one index finger. Alarmed, I immediately began to pray, by replacing thoughts of fear with an awareness of God's gentle presence.

Over the next few weeks, I prayed daily for healing. In silent communion with God, I affirmed: My substance is entirely spiritual. I studied the Christian Science Bible Lesson and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy to understand what Christian Science teaches—that I am a pure and perfect spiritual being, not a vulnerable human being susceptible to disease. My deepest prayer was to yield to God's view of me and not be swayed by fear or impressed with physical sensation or appearance. I kept a mental watch to be sure I was not entertaining any fearful suggestions of where this condition might lead.

During this time, there wasn't so much a specific healing insight as there was a gradual budding and blossoming within me of this primary fact of existence: I am, as God created me, spiritual, not material. My prayer became increasingly to nurture this growing understanding, moment by moment, day by day.
