FREE FROM LABELS, FREE FROM SUFFERING

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT to do what is good? Is it to avoid suffering eternally if we commit sin?

This week's Christian Science Bible Lesson provides a good response to that persistent theological question. It has a lot to offer about removing false labels that bring suffering, as well as recognizing God's grace.

The famous parable of the prodigal son in Section II (Luke 15, citation 7) stood out to me as highlighting the issue of honor and shame. The lines of honor and shame were deeply embedded in the culture of the world in which Jesus lived. In this story, the younger son greatly dishonors his family and also brings shame on himself.
