ANYONE CAN BE A HEALER

A WEALTH OF OPPORTUNITIES

FROM THE TIME I was a teenager, going into the public practice of Christian Science healing was my goal. I wanted to follow in the footsteps of my mother, who was a Christian Science practitioner.

As a child, healing through prayer took place in my life and all around me. For instance, I witnessed my brother's healing of a severe underbite, considered to be an inherited condition. My mother had been growing in her understanding of God as Father-Mother, and one day, in her prayers, it became crystal clear to her that her son could only inherit perfection, not genetic abnormalities. Shortly afterward, my brother's jaw and teeth realigned, naturally and perfectly. This healing made a deep impression on me and strengthened my conviction that Christian Science heals and that I could heal, too.

After high school, I tucked my goal away while I went out to see the world. First, I attended college for a short time, then went on a tour in the United States Foreign Service in Japan, followed by several years of work and more college attendance back in the United States. Then came marriage to a widower with two young teenagers and a preteen. For many months before I met my husband, I'd been cherishing an expanded sense of my completeness as a child of God, and was not really surprised to find fulfillment of the Psalmist's promise, "God setteth the solitary in families" (Ps. 68:6). But oh, my goodness, what a wealth of opportunities for healing prayer this new family situation provided! It certainly wasn't all fun and games like the TV show The Brady Bunch, which was popular around that time.
