Testimony of Healing April 14, 2008 Issue

PAIN—FREE

I'd had pain in my legs for about four years, with the condition appearing to worsen. But now, and through Christian Science prayer alone, I'm free of pain.

Discomfort had become part of my everyday life. Still, I continued to treat it through my study of Christian Science because of other healings I'd had through prayer. I kept reading Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures to try to understand God better, and to understand the unreality of what Mary Baker Eddy called "mortal mind." Sentences like this one were helpful: "Mortal mind, acting from the basis of sensation in matter, is animal magnetism; but this so—called mind, from which comes all evil, contradicts itself, and must finally yield to the eternal Truth [God], or the divine Mind, expressed in Science" (p.178).

My mother had been raised in another religious faith, and growing up I remember her praying to what she called "the Christ" when she felt that other people's thoughts—like anger or fear of sickness—had affected her well-being. I noticed that she never took those thoughts as a personal attack.
