COMPLETE CONFIDENCE AND FREEDOM

A few years ago, I was elected to be the Second Reader for my Christian Science branch church. I'd been a First Reader years earlier, and had enjoyed this time of devoted, loving service. However, as I began my new assignment as Second Reader, which required that I read the Bible passages from the weekly Lesson Sermon at each Sunday service, I found myself frequently facing physical challenges before church started.

For instance, there were several mornings when I was suddenly overcome with coughing attacks. Each time, I addressed the situation by prayerfully turning to God for healing. It was particularly effective to view these attacks, which I saw as challenges to my true spiritual selfhood, as one would view a bully. Instead of giving in to the symptoms, I mentally faced them down, with the conviction that I was doing God's good work and nothing could prevent me from fulfilling my duties.

Since the hour on the podium during each church service involved communicating God's Word from the Bible, I knew that nothing could interfere with this holy time. I affirmed that nothing could keep the Word from reaching the ears and hearts of the congregation. As I prayed along these lines, quick healing resulted. Each time this occurred, I was able to go on to the podium with complete confidence and read with total freedom. Soon, the coughing attacks stopped completely.
