PRAYING FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

WHAT ABOUT GLOBAL WARNINGS OF GLOBAL WARMING?

Early this past January, I was happily sunbathing. I don't mean lying on a beach. But I had the windows fully open with the sun streaming in, and I could feel and delight in the warmth of the sun on my face.

That wouldn't have been too unusual if I'd been in Australia. But here in London, it should have felt like midwinter. If that was the result of global warming—the only result—I'd be all for it! But there are very legitimate concerns about the drastic implications of atmospheric warming to many nations.

I love to live a spiritual law articulated in Science and Health, which says, "In the scientific relation of God to man, we find that whatever blesses one blesses all, as Jesus showed with the loaves and the fishes,—Spirit, not matter, being the source of supply" (p.206). To me, this means no one can genuinely benefit at someone else's expense. So while scientists and other experts, politicians, and environmental advocates all debate appropriate steps to take about global warming, I also deeply care about my own response to this challenge to humankind. And I feel I can assign myself to what I know is also out there—namely, a worldwide prayer team of people responding to the threat through a trust in humankind's inexhaustible spiritual resources. I want to play my part as a "spiritual environmental advocate."
