Next in our biweekly series on how people have nurtured their public practice of Christian Science.
ANYONE CAN BE A HEALER
WHEN GOD BECAME MOST IMPORTANT
WHAT WAS GOING INTO the full-time public practice of Christian Science like for me? Similar to a toddler learning to walk.
In high school, my self-absorption pretty much ruled out helping others with prayer. But then in college, I experienced a dramatic character change and physical healing. After three weeks of completely losing my appetite for food, I felt totally disoriented. I called a Christian Science practitioner to pray with me and temporarily dropped out of a study-abroad program to fly home.
Each day I read a chapter of Science and Health, until a complete healing of my lost appetite came. And when it did come, it was like waking up from an exhausting dream in which I'd been constantly acting. Suddenly I was ready to trust that I—the person who had been hiding under so many facades—was worth knowing. And my desire to eat came back that very day. From then on, I ate normally and with moderation. I flew back to continue at school, knowing that God was the most important thing in my life (see Sentinel testimony, November 7, 1994).
