'I KNEW I WAS COMPLETELY SAFE AND WELL'

Early in 2006, I competed in a half-marathon race. I'd done some triathlons before, but this was the first experience I'd had with a marathon event. I'd been training for a couple of months and was eager to start the race.

For the first few miles, I felt strong and kept pace with my friend, who is a skilled runner. But after the fifth mile, I started to feel tired and mentally discouraged. I began to wonder if I was ever going to reach the finish line. I mumbled and grumbled my way to mile 12, where I suddenly collapsed and passed out.

The next thing I remember was waking up in the emergency room of a local hospital, hooked up to machines and surrounded by people bustling around my bed. The first words that came out of my mouth were: "I am a Christian Scientist."
