Next in our biweekly series on how people have nurtured their public practice of Christian Science.
GETTING MY FEET WET
EVER SINCE I BEGAN ATTENDING a Christian Science church in London back in the late '60s, I'd wanted to go into the practice of Christian Science healing. The reason? On my second visit, I'd heard the most wonderful testimony at a Wednesday evening meeting that made me realize Christian Science truly was the science that enabled Jesus to heal. Since I'd always been interested in finding ways to alleviate others' suffering, I couldn't imagine a better way to help people.
Because I came from an Anglican background, the terminology in Science and Health was unfamiliar to me at first, and the metaphysical reasoning wasn't always immediately clear. But, intuitively, I knew that with further exploration, Christian Science held the promise of healing.
Having "dipped my toe into the water," as a new student of Christian Science, I went to live in Switzerland to pursue my career as an accountant, keeping a desire to enter into the public practice close to my heart. Years passed, and although that desire was always there, I went through a period of my life that could only be described as a wilderness experience. Emotional distress and turmoil seemed to crop up in all avenues of my life.
