POINT OF VIEW: INSURANCE

RECENTLY THE "SENTINEL WATCH" column offered a useful and interesting perspective regarding Medicare in Australia. I have friends in different parts of the world who have chosen a similar approach to the question of healthcare and insurance. Their decision to participate in a national healthcare program is a legitimate and understandable choice. My choice was a little different.

In the United States where I live, there is a specific law providing that a Christian Science practitioner may opt out of the Social Security system on the basis of a conscientious objection to medical care.

I thought carefully about this question because it wasn't a decision just for that month. It had implications for myself, as well as for my wife, and for many years into the future. I fully respected the different direction taken by others who were in my profession. In fact, my spiritual reasoning had some parallels with the prayer that led to their decision.
