STRENGTH I DIDN'T KNOW I HAD

WHILE NOBODY would confuse me with a track star, one of my jobs requires me to run every so often. As a member of the US Army Reserve, I take an annual physical training test that includes a timed two-mile run.

My most recent test was last fall, and for whatever reason—busyness in my civilian job or being a new dad—I hadn't done my usual preparation. Since running doesn't come easily for me, I normally start training four to six weeks in advance. This time I found myself with only ten days to prepare.

At first, my thought process went something like this: When I train, I normally run every other day over a four-week period. Since I now have less than two weeks to get ready, I can run every day, and it'll work out pretty much the same.
