MAKING COLDS UNCOMMON FOR THE COMMON GOOD

EARLY IN MY STUDY of Christian Science, I visited a Christian Science practitioner regularly, mostly to ask questions. At one visit, it was obvious that I had a heavy cold. The practitioner started telling me some spiritual truths that prayerfully addressed my physical condition. I didn't understand what she was saying, and I really didn't feel like making the effort to try.

At one point, though, I got the impression that if I would embrace the truth of what she was saying, my change of thinking would not only bless me but others as well. I distinctly remember thinking something along the lines of, "It's not worth the effort to change my thinking just for myself, but if it will help anyone else, I'll try." And I must have said something like that to the practitioner, for she assured me that my standing for the spiritual truths of God's allness and goodness would indeed bless others. She concluded by saying that some day I would realize that being healed through spiritual means would be well worth it to me also. This certainly has proved to be true.

I don't remember how quickly I was healed of that cold, but I shall never forget the lesson I learned. Our individual healings, and the spiritual insights they involve, make a lasting contribution to the common good. In fact, this is what motivates many to take Primary class instruction in Christian Science. This twelve-lesson course from an authorized teacher is not to be taken simply to find healing for oneself, but to enable the learner to heal others. This instruction makes one aware that inharmonious conditions of any kind are not to be merely endured.
