FREED FROM CRIPPLING FEAR

In 1998 I was living in upstate New York. One morning I attended a service at the Methodist church in my community. The minister asked the congregation if they felt blessed or stressed. She then went on to share how she had learned that stress can play a large role in causing sickness. But she offered hope by sharing the Bible message, "Nothing shall separate us from the love to God" (see Rom 8:39).

The year before, I had experienced a remarkable transformation of thought that enabled me to take the upper hand when it comes to feeling stressed. Off and on for about a year, I hadn't been able to hold food down after my evening meal, and I would have chest pains. This frightened me, and I would call a Christian Science practitioner to pray with me. There was always quick relief, but a few weeks later the symptoms would recur.

At the end of that year, pressures in my life seemed to cave in on me. I was unable to work for about three weeks. I was gripped with fear. I was not able to eat, sleep, or lie down. The Christian Science practitioner whom I called for treatment through prayer spoke with me many times a day about God's love and support. Although I didn't feel able to study or pray on my own, I put my total trust in God and knew the prayers of the practitioner were effective. I was expectant of healing, and gradually I was able to walk, study Christian Science on my own, and return to work.
