GETTING THE WORK DONE

IT'S MIDWINTER in the Northern Hemisphere. The calendar year is well started, and for many companies, schools, and various other organizations, it's the time to get cracking on making the year's plans a reality.

If you're not among those individuals, maybe you have plans of your own that you need to get started on—and today is a good day to begin. Each day presents us with the opportunity for improvement and progress, as Mary Baker Eddy confirmed when she wrote: "Success in life depends upon persistent effort, upon the improvement of moments more than upon any other one thing. . . . If one would be successful in the future, let him make the most of the present" (Miscellaneous Writings 1883—1896, p. 230).

Thinking of plans that may even take some time to bring to fruition, I recall a project that I began about 25 years ago, when I was responsible for a group of investment managers in a trust company. It was an era when international investing was becoming popular, and many mutual funds already offered an international fund. I wanted to do the same for our customers, many of whom we served as trustee under complicated wills. As of that date, I believe that no other bank-regulated trust company had offered an international trust fund. (There were difficult legal issues involved that someone had to work through for the first time.)
