Next in our biweekly series on how people have nurtured their public practice of Christian Science.
ANYONE CAN BE A HEALER
'IT IS INEVITABLE'
I CAN STILL SEE the last sentence in my notes from Primary class instruction, the 12-day course I took in studying Christian Science: "It is inevitable that I heal in Christian Science, and I yearn to heal."
In the months following, it was as if that sentence opened a door in my heart. At first, it was the gentle recognition of yearning to heal. I knew that the suffering and injustice I saw were unnecessary, and God would not let them stand. So I yearned to help others, and I knew that must begin with strengthening my own understanding. I studied the Bible and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy, and prayed deeply and often to know God better and to witness only His ideas.
Proof that my healing practice was inevitable came more slowly than did my yearning for it. I think I saw my ability to heal as in the future. I had great plans. I loved my career in dance, and my husband and I wanted to have children. Most of all, I knew I needed to grow spiritually, and thought I might not be ready to help others through prayer until after those children had come and then grown up.
