BACK PAIN HEALED THROUGH PRAYER

I had just returned home from an early-morning horse ride. The sun was shining, and I was feeling full of energy, looking forward to an active day. When I bent down to pick up a pair of shoes, however, I felt something move in my back, and I was suddenly struck with an excruciating pain. For a moment, I thought I was going to pass out. One minute I was feeling full of joy and verve, and then I was almost immobilized with stiffness and pain.

In these situations, I am used to turning to prayer for assistance, and I quickly did so in this case. My thoughts had been racing around with disturbing suggestions such as whether I'd ever be able to sit on a horse again. So I first made myself still, mentally, and then I earnestly began to pray.

I affirmed that God, divine Mind, formed me in His consciousness—the only consciousness there is—and that I lived, and moved, and had my being in Him, as the Bible teaches (see Acts 17:28). I also declared to myself that nothing could impede God's view of me as anything less than perfect. Because God is Spirit, spiritual qualities are innate to His children by reflection, and they can't be interrupted or impaired in any way, since there is never a moment when we are outside His constant, loving care. Therefore it was impossible for me to express anything but poise, agility, balance, mobility, grace.
