GRATITUDE FOR GOD'S GREAT BLESSINGS
I knew nothing about Christian Science until I was a teenager. My aunt had been given a copy of Science and Health and had many healings from reading it. When my uncle found out she was reading the book, he insisted she get rid of it. He said, "That book has no place in our home." My aunt, not wanting to throw it out, gave it to my mother. She started reading it and was very impressed with its teachings.
At that time, I was suffering from an extremely bad case of eczema. My mother had taken me to many doctors for shots and other treatments, but none of them helped me. This condition became especially bad when I ate any acidic fruits or vegetables (such as strawberries, oranges, or tomatoes). So my diet was very restricted.
My mother decided to take me to see a Christian Science practitioner. The practitioner talked to me about my being a child of God, who was loved. She said that because of my spiritual relationship to God—because I was the image of divine Love itself—I could have dominion over any condition that was unlike God. This concept was new to me! The practitioner asked, "How could God, who created you in perfect love, cause His creation to suffer?" I had been taught to love God, and this way of seeing God's love for me made so much sense.
