What it takes to be a principal

The jelly and the stone

Ever wonder what it's like to be the principal of a school? John Falkingham from Cumbria, England, has the answers to your questions! Thanks to all our readers who sent their questions to the Kids' Sentinel telling us what they wanted to know.

What did you have to do in order to become a principal?

In England the principal of a school is called the "headteacher." I suppose this is because, to do this job, you first have to spend quite a lot of years teaching children yourself. Most headteachers have also spent a few years in a job called Deputy Headteacher. This is someone who helps the headteacher run the school. Once somebody wants to apply for the job as head of school, they have to take a special course to qualify. That's what I did. But even though I'm the headteacher now, I still do a little teaching myself.
