When I began working as a high-school teacher, I had not yet come to know of Christian Science. So, my concept of change of base as a problem-solving method remained at the mathematical level.

For more than ten years I did not attend church. I had become disenchanted with my church at that time because of what I erroneously perceived to be the hypocritical attitude of its clergy. I began investigating other ways of thinking. At one point during my search. I came across some copies of The Christian Science Journal and Christian Science Sentinel, which had been sent to a former teacher in my school. I read them avidly and with curiosity.
