people tell their stories

'Oh, now I get it'

When a new student came to our Sunday School earlier this year, I found out that his dad was in Iraq and his mom was in basic training, prior to going to Iraq. I had never really thought much about Iraq until I met him. Mostly I tried hard to ignore the war and would quickly change the channel whenever it was mentioned on the nightly news.

However, that all changed for me when I realized that the men and women serving in the armed forces were just like this boy's parents. They all had left loved ones at home. At great personal sacrifice, they were doing their jobs. It was then that I started praying daily for peace and protection for everyone in Iraq.

I'd often pray when I took my dog, Roly, out for a walk, and one of the thoughts that kept coming to me was this passage from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy: "One infinite God, good, unifies men and nations; constitutes the brotherhood of man: ends wars; fulfills the Scripture, 'Love thy neighbor as thyself' ..." (p. 340). I liked praying with this because of assurance it gave me that God has the power to stop all wars, and the promise that we can love each other.
