Going the extra mile to vote

As a Relatively New Resident in the United States, I've been interested to find that many people here don't vote say they abstain because they don't think that voting affects their lives.

In practice, one vote has rarely made a difference in an electoral contest. But what about voting as a symbol of engagement in civic and community life—a commitment to living fairly and agreeably with others?

The Bible encourages this approach in its first letter to Timothy: "First, supplications, prayers, intercessions and thanksgivings should be made on behalf of all men: for kings and rulers in positions of responsibility, so that our common life may be lived in peace and quiet" (I Tim. 2:1, J. B. Phillips translation).
