New York, New York!
As I crossed The Finish Line in the Yellowknife marathon (26.2 miles) in the Canadian Northwest Territories in August, I marveled at the majesty of the arctic landscape and the limited number of people who live there. I also found myself contrasting that experience with my last New York City marathon and what had made that so special. This year's race is on November 7.
I've never forgotten the long preparation the New York event demanded—the endless training runs, special conditioning, and complicated travel arrangements needed to get me to the start line. But I found the most help in a special kind of preparation that has served me best in 15 years of marathon running—prayer.
In the weeks before any big race, I devote at least half an hour a day to what I call my "spiritual training." I pray for a better understanding of my relationship with God. Then I make a special effort to express the strength and endurance of God out on the road.
