At home in church

Churchless for more than 15 years, I wasn't looking for anything to join. But I began to feel uncomfortable about my little son and daughter being spiritually illiterate. I didn't attribute this feeling to any holy calling. It was pretty much the same way I didn't want my kids to be ignorant of nursery rhymes. But that feeling opened a crack in the door of my heart, and a new life began for me.

A few weeks later, I checked out Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy from the public library. The first day I read it, I knew I had found a God I could love, and I wondered if there was a church that was related to what I was reading. The Yellow Pages listed a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, only three miles away. The ad said, "All are welcome."

That night, baby in arms, I walked into their Wednesday testimony meeting. All I could see was light and smiling faces. I was surprised to hear the person who read from the Bible, reading also from Science and Health — a book I'd thought was some secret relic I'd pulled from the dusty shelves of history.
