Gathering news stories with a spiritual perspective week by week, we wondered what kinds of material the Sentinel of a century ago carried. We found the magazine Mary Baker Eddy was publishing in its early years filled with newsy, topical essays, articles, jokes, and tidbits—often excerpted from other magazines and newspapers—that spoke to a broad world audience. Here is a glimpse into the Sentinel of about 100 years ago.
For I hold what God wills above what I will. I cleave to Him as His servant and follower; my impulses are one with His, my pursuit is one with His; in a word my will is one with His.
—Epictetus
