What if you broke a bone?
I grew up as a Christian Scientist, using prayer when I needed healing. From time to time, I was asked by friends, "What would you do if you broke a bone?" Well, I always answered in a way that I believed was true, but I'd never had to prove that answer to myself—until I was in my late 30s.
I had two preteen daughters and a two-year-old. Our family was embarking on a new phase in our lives—we were moving halfway across the country from New Orleans, where we had always lived.
One afternoon while my husband, Don, was up in the attic clearing things out, and I was downstairs, cleaning, I backed up and tripped over the vacuum cleaner, with my foot still under the vacuum cleaner while the rest of me fell down. I heard a cracking sound, and when I looked at my foot, I saw that my foot was misshapen to the point that my sneaker was sticking out on one side.
