Operation 'New Hope'

One of my greatest desires was to help these people live with dignity and in freedom.

In 1992, Colonel Leonel Milone was appointed commander of a Uruguayan Army battalion that formed part of a United Nations peacekeeping operation in Cambodia. During this mission the battalion had the opportunity to help save a group of people who had been abandoned and forgotten for years. Colonel Milone and his personnel spared no effort in this humanitarian work. A Christian Scientist, he found in the teachings of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, the encouragement and inspiration to fulfill his unprecedented task, which in turn, was an answer to the prayers of this group of people, who had the conviction that their longing for freedom would be satisfied. Now retired, Colonel Milone told about this event during a talk with the Spanish Edition of The Herald of Christian Science.

After many years of war, Cambodia finally allowed the United Nations to help bring peace to the country. The UN requested forces from different continents, giving them all an opportunity to participate in the effort to maintain world peace. Uruguay was one of them, and I was appointed commander of the first battalion to be posted to that country in Southeast Asia.

I didn't do any specific spiritual research or study for this mission. I've been a lifelong stu dent of Christian Science, and, therefore, the Bible and Science and Health are very much present in my way of thinking no matter what it is that I have to do.
