In case of monster, turn on the light!
I made up a funny story to help my children when they're scared or hurt. Very often, however, I wind up telling it to myself.
"Imagine," I begin, "that you wake up in the middle of the night. And in the darkness, one of your toys looks like a terrifying monster. You're very scared, and you scream out for me to 'come get rid of the monster.' "
"What would you think," I then ask them, "if I went into your room with a big super soaker and started squirting water in the general direction of the monster to try to melt it? Would that get rid of the monster?"
