PRAYERS from around the world

I am reminded of a time during the middle of the war in Rhodesia [Zimbabwe] when I spent six months praying for an answer to why we see this phenomenon called evil. As clearly as if someone were speaking to me, the answer came one day: "The sum total of evil is what we don't know about God." I realized that the word know is an active word, and have since set about getting on with "knowing God." We cannot "know" evil—because God is All. I've realized that filling our minds with Truth and Love prevents terrorism from gaining entry, while fear, helplessness, and anger fuel terrorist thoughts.

The starting point of my prayers since September 11 has been that God and each of us as His image and likeness are at one. And because we are at one with God, we are at one with one another. Beyond attacks and counterattacks, this fundamental unity is actually at the base of creation. I prayed along these lines in the 1980s and so, with many others, feel I helped contribute to the ending of the seemingly intractable conflict between the Soviet Union and the United States. I feel confident that such prayer will help resolve the current conflict, too.
