Get a grip!

Hey STEVE—

Here are a few ideas I've had, marking the beginning of my "great college adventure."

I don't know what you've encountered, but most of my friends have had a hard time adjusting to living away from home. These friends predicted that I, being the last of our high-school group to leave for school, would have the hardest time of all. I assured them that no, nothing like that would happen to me. Despite my initial confidence, though, I did have to deal with homesickness.

My whole family came to see me settled in at my new college home. We spent a happy time together until the day before they were to leave. That day, joy was the last thing on my mind. All my friends' predictions seemed to be coming true. I was just miserable, scared of the distance that was soon to separate me from my family. Nothing—thoughts of how soon Thanksgiving would come, of frequent phone calls, of e-mail—was able to calm me down for more than an hour at a time.
