Healed of inability to retain food
I had just graduated from college and was getting established in a new job and a new apartment. I had recently completed a two-week course on Christian Science, and I was practically bursting with the love of Truth that I was discovering. But sometimes there were very dark days, days in which I questioned my ability to really practice Christian Science. I thought that Jesus' words "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect" (Matt. 5:48) meant that I had to make myself into a perfect human being, and I was acutely aware of how far short of that goal I fell.
I developed a digestive difficulty and was unable to retain food over a period of weeks. I became so weak that I couldn't care for myself, so my parents took me back to their home and cared for me with patience and tenderness. My dad, who was not a Christian Scientist, raised the question of going to the hospital for medical treatment.
This was a turning point for me. I realized that I couldn't just avoid medical treatment because I was afraid of what the doctors might say or do. My mom helped me understand that choosing Christian Science treatment has to be for a positive reason—because you understand that it heals. I'll always be grateful for her encouragement and for my dad's willingness to support my choice of spiritual healing.
