From turmoil to calm
Facing an impending divorce, single motherhood, the selling of our home, and finding a new home for my young son and me, all while maintaining the poise and skills needed for a challenging teaching career, was overwhelming. I cried in despair daily. I wanted to work things out with my spouse, but, in his eyes, it was not an option. I was heartsick and missing days of school over physical ailments as well. I prayed a lot, leaning on God to get me through the duties of each day as a teacher and the responsibilities as a mother. I learned a lot about prayer from a Christian Science practitioner who helped me often, helping me understand that God was in control, even when I felt so helpless.
A hymn from the Christian Science Hymnal (No. 359) that often encouraged me as we drove off to school each morning and throughout the day included these words:
