FAMILIES SOMETIMES TAKE SHAPE BEFORE THE MEMBERS MEET

How could it be that I knew my daughter long before we met? I hadn't a clue what she'd look like, of course. Truth be told, I didn't know for sure that she wouldn't turn out to be a he. Nevertheless, I knew her.

I knew she'd be spunky. I knew she'd be smart. I knew she'd be funny and kind, and no matter what she looked like, I knew she'd be gorgeous—with a beauty radiating from the inside out. I also knew we'd be a good match.

Of course, there was lots I didn't know, too. I didn't know how spunky she'd be (or how hard it would be to keep up with her at times). I didn't know how smart she'd be (or how incredibly many questions I would have to answer as a result). I didn't know how kind she'd be (to the point of scolding me for complaining about a store within earshot of the cashier, lest I hurt his feelings). And I never could have imagined how perfect a match we'd be.
