ON THE BASIS of their interpretation of the book of Revelation in the Bible, some Christians believe that Jesus could return soon, possibly in the transition between the year 2000 and 2001. Christian filmmakers and others are tapping into this interest in the apocalypse. Left Behind, based on the best-selling novel by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins, is tentatively set for release in October of this year. The novel offers its version of what happens to nonbelievers who are left behind after the Rapture has come and Christians are taken away.
Not all Christians accept these theological views, and some argue that books like Left Behind focus more on fear than on faith. But the filmmakers reply that they are attempting to open up Revelation for Christians and non-Christians alike.
