QUESTIONS THAT MAKE YOU THINK

A Newsweek cover story, "Science Finds God," tells the story of a scientist, a former atheist, who now believes in God. One of the questions that had perplexed him was "Why is there something instead of nothing?"

I found this to be a most intriguing question. I told a friend about it. He responded by quoting the poet E. E. Cummings: "always the beautiful answer who asks a more beautiful question." Collected Poems [1938], Introduction .

One of the wonderful things that comes from learning more about God is that you encounter many beautiful questions and equally beautiful answers.

Among the questions asked in the Bible are God's to Adam, "Who told thee that thou wast naked?" (Gen. 3:11); Cain's to God, "Am I my brother's keeper?" (Gen. 4:9); God's to Job, "Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth?" (Job 38:4); and St. Paul's to the Corinthians, "What communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial?" (II Cor. 6:14, 15).

I thought again about the question "Why is there something instead of nothing?" I knew another question was waiting: what is that something? Here are some of the ways Science and Health looks at—and asks questions about—this issue: "Which ought to be substance to us,—the erring, changing, and dying, the mutable and mortal, or the unerring, immutable, and immortal?" (pp. 278–279); "When Spirit made all, did it leave aught for matter to create?" (p. 543); "If Spirit is all and is everywhere, what and where is matter?" (p. 223); "Did God, Truth, create error?" (p. 287).

The Bible contains over 3,000 questions and Science and Health over 500.

There are many other questions to explore in this study—beautiful questions. The Bible contains over 3,000 questions and Science and Health over 500. I'm convinced that these 3,500+ questions help us understand God, strengthen our sincerity, and make us think more deeply about the true nature of life.
