Prayer and rejoicing conquer severe pain

Once, a pain developed in my hip and leg over a period of six months. It became so bad that I couldn't sit or stand or lie down without tremendous suffering. Finally, after coming home from work on a Friday evening, I just lay down in agony. I could not get up. My wife prayed for me and I prayed. We called a Christian Science practitioner to treat me.

When the practitioner asked if I wanted to take something, I didn't know what she meant. She explained: did I want to have an injection to kill the pain? I said no. I told her, "I don't care if this takes three years, I am not going to give in to this pain." I was surprised at my response. My hip hurt really bad.

For three days there was no change, no sleep, no peace. On Monday my wife went to work. Home alone, I communed with God in earnest. By ten o'clock I had learned that a sinful, sensual, suffering mortal was not my selfhood or anyone else's. What is more beautiful, pure and perfect, upright, strong, and free than God's own self-expression, man—me?
