Severe pain and weight loss healed
One night I woke with an unusual, uncomfortable ache in my thighs and abdominal area. I reached out to God for a healing idea. I remember praying with ideas from "the scientific statement of being" in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy (see p. 468). In thinking about this statement, I recognized that God, Spirit, and His spiritual laws govern my body—not material cells or physical laws. I also prayed with another concept brought out in Science and Health: "The transmission of disease or of certain idiosyncrasies of mortal mind would be impossible if this great fact of being were learned,—namely, that nothing inharmonious can enter being, for Life is God" (p. 228).
I persisted in praying with these ideas over the next few days, especially at night when the condition seemed most difficult. After a couple of nights, I called a Christian Science practitioner for help. I was grateful for her loving, intelligent treatment, and for the ability to keep working at my job during the daytime. It wasn't long, however, before colleagues began noticing that I was losing considerable weight. They asked me if I was seeing a doctor. I assured them with sincere confidence that I was receiving prayerful treatment from a Christian Science practitioner.
While studying the Bible and Science and Health one evening, I came across the following passage in Science and Health, which I held on to like a life preserver. It told me that no matter how much the discord tried to impress me, the basis of my thinking needed to be "perfect God and perfect man." The passage reads. "The Christlike understanding of scientific being and divine healing includes a perfect Principle and idea,—perfect God and perfect man,—as the basis of thought and demonstration" (p. 259). I could see I should begin with "perfect God and perfect man," and think out from there. I should be asking, "What is God causing? How has God made me? Why does God keep me in perfect health?"
