Protection for a prisoner of war

During my lifetime association with Christian Science, I have been constantly grateful for God's protection, guidance, and healing power. The understanding of God's loving care and the expectancy of good that I gained from attending Sunday School enabled me to attend school, to obtain an aeronautical engineering degree, and to complete military pilot training without missing a day because of illness or physical disability.

During World War II, the bomber I was flying as copilot was shot down.

The airplane was on fire, making rapid bailout necessary. Following three other crew members out a forward hatch, I looked up and found my parachute was seriously damaged. My rate of descent was noticeably greater than that of the other crew members'. But God's protection was evident, as the parachute caught in some tall trees and left me hanging close enough to the ground for an easy release from the parachute harness. Later that day I was taken prisoner, and spent nine months as a prisoner of war.
