MY WIFE, MARGIE, and I were on our knees one evening. No, it wasn't a religious experience. We were in some bushes up a mountain, checking our repair work on a cistern. We store water there that keeps the lawn green around our house a half-mile below.
Suddenly Margie touched my arm. I glanced at her and then followed her eyes to a few inches away where a large rattlesnake was coiled and ready to strike. Incredibly, we hadn't seen him when we first knelt there. We quietly and very gradually backed away.
