NEVER DISOWNED

My mother was very possessive even after I had reached adulthood and was living in another state. She endeavored to control every detail of my life and was jealous of any thing or person that took my attention away from her. When I began to study Christian Science, it became a target for her hatred. Despite my earnest prayers and efforts for peace, she and my stepfather disowned me.

During this time, this statement from the Bible was invaluable: "Be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage" (Gal. 5:1). To me, this meant that I could trust God and go forward, not back. I realized that my true inheritance is from God, divine Love, and that Love never disowns any of its children. I also recalled many times when God had guided me. This showed that God was already parenting me.

It was a strange feeling to have in essence no human parents while these individuals were still alive. At the time all of this was going on, however, I was reading through Mary Baker Eddy's prose writings, and each day I would find in them a sustaining thought.
