The story of Daniel
Long ago, nearly six hundred years before Jesus was born, the city of Jerusalem was conquered by the Babylonian army of King Nebuchadnezzar. Thousands of Israelites were taken as captives back to Babylon. This was an unhappy time for the Hebrew people.
Among the captives was a young boy called Daniel. His story was written down many years later when the Hebrews were oppressed by another king. Here is what the Bible tells us about Daniel in the book of Daniel, chapters 1–6.
King Nebuchadnezzar ordered his chief servant, Ashpenaz, to choose the most intelligent and best-looking of the Hebrew youths to serve in the king's palace. For three years, these young people would be trained in the language of the Babylonians and the sciences of those days. And they would be given the king's food and wine to make them strong.
