Hearing fully restored

While living in another state in the Midwest I suddenly lost hearing in one ear. I immediately prayed, declaring my oneness with and inseparability from God. I thought about this definition of ears, given in Science and Health: "Not organs of the so-called corporeal senses, but spiritual understanding.

"Jesus said, referring to spiritual perception, 'Having ears, hear ye not?' (Mark viii. 18.)" (p. 585)

I realized that it was spiritual understanding I needed to prove in my experience, and that I had the right to be healed. Because, in truth, I am not mortal but a spiritual idea, I can never lose a quality that is mine. Despite this initial prayer, the condition persisted. When speaking to co-workers, I turned to hear them with the other ear, but even while I was engaged in conversation, I declared (to myself) my spirituality as the child of God, with all my senses perfect—hearing and listening with love. While using the telephone, I silently declared that nothing could keep me from trusting God. I found these verses from Luke helpful, too: "And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him" (22:50, 51). This message assured me that even if I appeared to be losing an ear, it was not true, because Jesus had restored the ear for the servant. I was the image and likeness of God, and through my receptivity to God's Word I could be healed, too. I am grateful that the healing came in a few days, and it has been permanent.
