David—shepherd, musician, warrior, king
INTRODUCTION TO THE BIBLE
This is the history of a brave boy who trusted in God with all his heart. From being a shepherd and a musician, David became a warrior and then a great king. Along the way he did wonderful things but also made many mistakes, which taught him lessons and made him wiser. So much so that, although he lived almost three thousand years ago, people still turn to his story in the Bible for comfort and advice. (See First Samuel, chapters 16 to 19 and chapters 24 and 25. Also, Second Samuel, chapters 1 and 11.)
As a young boy, David took care of his family's sheep. He needed to find fields of grass for them to eat and water for them to drink. If a sheep was lost, he had to find it.
The Bible tells us that David learned to trust God, and God helped him take care of the sheep. When a bear came near the sheep, God protected them from harm. God even saved them from a hungry lion.
