Trouble with legs healed

About four years after my retirement from business, I became temporarily incapacitated in my legs. I asked a Christian Science practitioner to treat me. She effectively prayed for me, and required that I do a better job of praying for myself. As a result, I was freed of the difficulty and able to spend more time as a volunteer Christian Science chaplain, reading the Bible Lessons (found in the Christian Science Quarterly) in English and Spanish and counseling prison inmates.

After my wife passed on, I continued the prison work, though without the support she had given me by playing piano accompaniments to the hymns sung by the inmates. Mental backsliding resulted in a recurrence of the leg difficulty. A little later I remarried. When the leg problem, which I had been "getting by" with, was not healed, my new wife, who was not a Christian Science was understandably worried.

To relieve her concerns, I agreed to have a diagnosis if the problem was not healed by Christian Science in three days. It was not, so I went to a hospital emergency room. There was a four-hour delay before I could be attended to. While I waited and prayed, the practitioner agreed to continue treating me.

I felt the healing Christ presence and was not surprised that when the medical technicians examined me—and they were very thorough—they found nothing wrong. By the time they had gotten to me, the swelling had already disappeared. Like other healings I have had through prayer, this one was a signal for me to renew my efforts to overcome sinful thoughts. These words of Mary Baker Eddy were most helpful during this healing: "Ofttimes examine yourselves, and see if there be found anywhere a deterrent of Truth and Love, and 'hold fast that which is good'" (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, pp. 128–129). The difficulty has not returned.

I felt the healing Christ presence and was not surprised that when the medical technicians examined me, they found nothing wrong.

I am grateful to testify about the prophecy of the promised Comforter that Mary Baker Eddy's discovery fulfilled.
