To Our Readers

Denise Kahn isn't a movie mogul. She's not a politician. The paparazzi don't stalk her every move. She isn't making headliness—well, not in the usual sense.

But Ms. Kahn is a big story in some people's lives. She's a piano teacher in New York City, concentrating on adult beginners. For the business executive, the heart surgeon, the stockbroker, the attorney, and the other adults she has taken under wing, life is richer and more enjoyable thanks to her nurturing.

One recognizes a kind of pioneering spirit impelling Denise Kahn's work. She leads her students, one practice session at a time, into a realm they had only dreamed of most of their lives, or visited briefly as youngsters—the realm of making music. "Music can create these beautiful moments out of nothing," Denise told interviewer and best-selling author Noah Adams. "We can be sitting here and play a phrase and suddenly there's beauty."1
