Prayer heals dysentery
Some years ago while touring in South America, I had dysentery. I prayed, and the problem appeared to be lessening until one morning when I got up and found that it had become worse. I knew more praying had to be done. In addition, I had a fever and could not remain on my feet for longer than a few minutes. We were traveling around Ecuador that day with friends. I remained in the car most of the day, praying silently. I knew I had to think correctly about everyone on the tour. In truth, there could not be one case of dysentery; we were all children of God—perfect, healthy, and whole.
That evening when we arrived back at our hotel, I went immediately to bed. I woke about four o'clock the next morning. Though my fever had broken, I was still experiencing dysentery and had severe stomach cramps. I told my husband that I doubted if we would be able to make our flight commitment at half past six. Even as I said the words, I knew it was a lie! Divine Mind had made it possible for us to be on this trip, and no error was going to keep us from accomplishing what we had set out to do.
My husband offered to read to me from Science and Health. After he had read a favorite passage of his, I asked him to read "the scientific statement of being" (see p. 468). As he was reading it, I silently cried out to God that I was willing to accept His will for me, that there was nothing else that could help me. When my husband was halfway through reading "the scientific statement of being" for the second time, it was as though I heard a voice saying, "Perfect God, perfect man. You are perfect right now."
