SATISFIED WITH WHO YOU ARE?

People like to feel worthy of attention, or at least satisfied with who they are. This isn't surprising, because everyone's true nature is, in fact, very special. God made us that way, and Christ Jesus confirmed it. Jesus said: "Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows" (Luke 12:6, 7).

Of course, the value of our God-given individuality doesn't depend on our appearance or on how much people notice us. We are each important because we express the spiritual individuality God gave us. What could be better?

The problem is that there still might be things about ourselves that we just don't like. When I was in high school, I thought I was unattractively skinny and felt sure that a bigger physique would bring the satisfaction I wanted. Consequently, I became a fairly active bodybuilder. I claimed to be doing it to help my athletic performance, but my biggest motivation was to feel more worthy of attention. I liked the change in appearance, and I did draw more attention to myself, but to my surprise, I didn't find the satisfaction I had expected I would.
