Watching the world from a spiritual perspective

"Doctors often shy away from this area completely. ... But whether the patient believes in God or goes to church is an important part of many patients' lives," says Dr. John Peteet, a professor of clinical psychiatry at the Harvard Medical School. "Psychiatrists need to understand how to talk to them about it."
Dr. Peteet and others will be able to help future doctors do just that through a course funded by a grant from the John Templeton Foundation. The course will teach students how to discuss spirituality with patients in a helpful way. The grant to Harvard was one of seven given nationwide under the auspices of the National Institute for Healthcare Research. Next year, the course will explore the traditions of different religions.
