IF A LOVED ONE NEEDS CARE

What happens if one's parents are no longer able to care for themselves, and no other family help is available to assist? Some people have enlisted the services of a care facility. Two women who did this, both Christian Scientists, found very meaningful ways they could be of service when their mothers moved into care facilities. They shared some of their thoughts with the Sentinel.

Jeannie McCloskey is the executive director of a nonprofit organization. Her mother, who lived with her for many years was looked after by a home care worker while Jeannie was at work. Gradually, though, it became apparent that a change would better meet her mother's needs.

"This was a very difficult decision to make, but I felt I needed to do it in order to provide the needed care for my mother. It was hard to keep from thinking about how much I would miss her and to overcome a false sense of personal responsibility. But I had to. You need to go back to the Mother and Father of us all—God. You can't feel as though you are your mother's mother."
