Healed of tuberculosis and rheumatism

Members of my family have been students of Christian Science since the early 1900s. My maternal grandmother was caring for her two-year-old granddaughter, who had been diagnosed by a physician as having tuberculosis of the hip. She was scheduled to be hospitalized the following week for an operation. As my grandmother was holding the child and weeping, a corset saleswoman knocked at her door. This woman inquired about the cause of the weeping. After being informed of the problem, this dear woman—a Christian Scientist—asked if my grandmother would like her to pray for the child. The answer was yes, and several days later the child was found to be well. After this healing, my grandmother and her family immediately began attending the local Church of Christ. Scientist.

Time and again, ideas came to me as I was listening for God's guidance.

I have experienced numerous healings over the years. Among them have been healing of colds, flu, what appeared to be appendicitis, rheumatism, a urinary problem, and back pains. The healing of rheumatism occurred while I was a college student. It came about over a period of many weeks with treatment from a Christian Science practitioner. I remember that fear was quickly met. One of my memories of that healing was of continuing to play on a soft-ball team throughout this time. I had absolute confidence that the healing would come, so I continued all my normal activities.

The urinary problem occurred when I was visiting a city far from home. Here again, fear was quickly overcome after I called a practitioner in that city. I received quick relief from pain and was able to complete my visit in relative comfort. The complete healing came about as a result of persistent prayer on the part of the practitioner and myself. I clung steadfastly to the truth that I am God's spiritual idea, not a suffering mortal.

In addition to these physical healings, Christian Science was an immeasurable help to me in completing educational programs to receive my bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. I learned to acknowledge the omnipresence of divine Mind, God, in writing academic articles and books over the years. Time and again, ideas came to me as I was listening for God's guidance. Each day before beginning my writing, I would establish in thought the fact that there is only one Mind, and that man is the manifestation of that Mind. I often affirmed that the divine Mind is my only real Mind.

The night before taking a licensing examination, the thought came to get up from bed and re-examine three particular areas of the subject matter. I did so, and questions on each area were on the examination the next morning. So I was well prepared to answer them.

I am very grateful to have met and married another student of Christian Science, and to have the joy of seeing our two children become active in this religion. In their growing-up years, the children were healed of earaches and colds and were protected in many ways. Our son was quickly healed when a neighborhood friend accidentally shot him near the eye with a pellet gun.

Words cannot express the gratitude that I feel to God, to Christ Jesus, and to Mary Baker Eddy, who discovered this Science, founded our Church, and continues to provide leadership through her many published works.
